Black Five Media

With the ever changing face of conflict and war these days, there are certain factors which are becoming more and more important. The opposing side is harder to identify, as they mix with civilians and the days of standardised combat are long gone. Armoured vehicles have advanced to a much higher level, due to road side bombs, car bombs and rocket propelled grenade attacks. Military intelligence and covert intelligence continues to become more and more high tech, on both sides of our conflicts. Finally the media have also been involved at the highest levels yet, particularly in the middle east.

The armoured vehicles now used in places like Iraq and Afghanistan have a variety of difficulties to overcome. The terrain could not vary more, from endless flat sandy desert, rocky mountainous terrain and winding urban landscapes to navigate, specialty vehicles have been developed to transport officials and army personnel as safely as possible. The increase of side attacks, has also called for a rethink of the way armoured vehicles are defended. Controlling road blocks, check points and securing inner city green zones have all presented unique problems for the army’s armoured vehicle fleet.

Enemies we now face are harder to identify. They have no uniforms, no borders, no distinctive features from the general population where our troops are involved. This has increased the need for specialised army intelligence and counter intelligence methods. A major obstacle has been gaining the trust of the average local in the middle east. Steps have been taken to understand their way of life and expectations of the future. But with terrorism operating on a global scale, our intelligence operations have the challenge to monitor threats on many fronts. While the safety of our country and securing its borders was the focus of the earlier part of this decade, the priority now is to identify threats before the try to enter our society.

The war on terrorism and our combat troops in the middle east still feature prominently on the news we see or read every day. Even though the financial global crisis has captured the world’s attention, terrorist threats still attract the lion’s share of international media attention. This has increased to the point where the media is seen as political tool for governments to present the information they want to their citizens, and for television stations to maintain viewer interest.

Our aim is to present the latest developments in these and other aspects of the world conflicts we are currently part of. Technology is one of the elements of these conflicts where we have a distinct advantage over our enemies and it is that technology that interests us the most.
